UTM Parameters Explained
UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are tags you add to the end of any URL to track where your traffic comes from. When someone clicks a UTM-tagged link, the parameters are sent to your analytics tool — Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude, or any other — so you can see exactly which source (Instagram, Google, newsletter), medium (social, cpc, email), and campaign (summer_sale, product_launch) drove the click.
Without UTM tags, your analytics will show traffic as “direct” or “referral” — giving you no insight into which specific campaign or ad is working. With UTM links, you can compare the performance of your Instagram bio link vs. Story swipe-up, your email header CTA vs. footer CTA, or your Google Ads vs. Facebook Ads — all in one analytics dashboard. Our free UTM builder generates properly formatted links in seconds, with all 5 standard parameters.
The 5 Parameters
utm_source (required)
The platform or website sending traffic. Examples: google, facebook, instagram, newsletter, whatsapp, linkedin. This tells you WHERE the click came from.
utm_medium (required)
The marketing channel type. Examples: cpc (paid click), email, social, referral, display, video. This tells you HOW the traffic arrived.
utm_campaign (required)
The specific campaign or promotion name. Examples: summer_sale_2026, product_launch_june, black_friday. This tells you WHY the traffic came.
utm_term (optional)
The paid search keyword that triggered the ad. Used primarily for Google Ads. Example: 'running shoes' or 'best crm software'. Helps optimize keyword bidding.
utm_content (optional)
Differentiates similar links in the same campaign. Examples: header_cta, footer_cta, blue_banner, video_ad. Perfect for A/B testing different ad creatives or link placements.
Real-World Examples
Here's how to set up UTM parameters for the most common marketing channels. Use these as templates for your own campaigns.
Instagram Bio Link
source=instagram, medium=social, campaign=bio_link. Add content=linktree or content=direct to differentiate if you use a link-in-bio tool vs. direct link.
WhatsApp Broadcast
source=whatsapp, medium=social, campaign=diwali_sale. Perfect for tracking traffic from WhatsApp broadcast lists, group shares, or status links.
Email Newsletter
source=newsletter, medium=email, campaign=weekly_digest_aug. Add content=header_cta or content=footer_cta to compare click placement.
Google Ads (Search)
source=google, medium=cpc, campaign=brand_keywords, term=myeasypage. Google Ads can auto-tag with gclid, but UTM gives you backup tracking.
Facebook / Meta Ads
source=facebook, medium=paid_social, campaign=retargeting_aug. Add content=carousel_1 or content=video_ad to compare ad creatives.
LinkedIn Post
source=linkedin, medium=social, campaign=thought_leadership. Track which LinkedIn posts drive the most traffic to your site.
YouTube Video Description
source=youtube, medium=video, campaign=tutorial_series. Add content=description_link or content=pinned_comment.
Offline / QR Code
source=qr_code, medium=offline, campaign=store_flyer. Track traffic from printed materials, business cards, or event handouts.
Best Practices
Always use lowercase
UTM parameters are case-sensitive in analytics. 'Facebook' and 'facebook' will show as two separate sources. Stick to lowercase for consistency.
Use underscores, not spaces
Spaces in URLs become %20 which is ugly and error-prone. Use snake_case (summer_sale) or hyphens (summer-sale) instead.
Never use UTMs on internal links
UTM parameters on links within your own site will override the original traffic source and break your attribution data. Use event tracking for internal links.
Create a naming convention doc
Share a simple spreadsheet with your team listing standard values for source, medium, and campaign. Prevents inconsistencies like 'fb' vs 'facebook'.
Shorten long UTM links
UTM links can get very long. Use a URL shortener (Bitly, your own domain shortener) for social media and printed materials.
Track UTM links in a spreadsheet
Maintain a master spreadsheet of all UTM links you've created. Include the date, channel, campaign, and link. Prevents duplicates and helps with reporting.
